Let me show you what I mean:
The deep color in the shelves is stunning! And that pink pouf is so fun in what is otherwise a very mature and elegant space.
This blue is a little too bright for me but it defiantly makes a statement and becomes the focal point of the room.
The green makes the shelves feel brighter and lighter than if it were wood colored.
This would surely make a statement in any room.
This piece is a cabinet, but the wallpaper idea can easily be used in shelves. The different patterns make for a very unique look.
|I lined the ends of my hutch with green decorative paper. It's much brighter and less formal with the green.|
If you do decide to add color to the back of your shelves, the decorative items displayed should replicate the colors found in the room.
Example: If you look closely at the first image, you'll notice that the browns found in the cabinet tie into the chair, the silvers link to the silvery color of the couch, and the whites link to the white fireplace mantel. This is also visible in the second image.
